Derby College success at National Finals

The Derby College Golf Team took 2nd place Nett in the recent British Schools and Colleges Golf Tour National Finals at Princes Golf Club, Kent on Wednesday 24th April.

The team of Greg Tickel (Hallamshire GC), Niall Quinn Jarvis (Kibworth GC), Sam Flannery (Woburn GC), Will Painter (Kedleston Park GC), Jordan Barker (Kedleston Park GC) and Charley Mycock (Buxton High Peak GC) finished a close 2nd in the Net event and 4th place in the Gross event.

Playing over the demanding Princes Golf Club which has hosted the Open Golf Championship the Derby players put in a great team effort. Out at 11.00 meant the players had to contend with strong 30 mph winds from the west which made the front 9 holes very challenging.

Leading the way for Derby was Will Painter 74-3-71, Niall Quinn Jarvis 75-1-74, Charley Mycock 76-6-70, Jordan Barker 77-4-73, Sam Flannery 77-2-75 and Greg Tickell 79-0-79.

With 4 scores out of 6 to count Derby finished on 302 Gross in 4th place and 288 Net in 2nd place 4 shots behind the Darren Clarke Golf School from Ireland who won both Gross and Net events.

PERFORMANCE GOLF ACADEMY DERBY programme manager Nigel Furniss commented;

“The team have performed well today and are to be congratulated on finishing runner up in a National Championship which had a quality field of players from all over Britain.

There were some great individual performances and the players have learnt a lot from playing links golf, in demanding conditions. Unfortunately one or two costly mistakes prevented the team from winning, however the real positive for us is that we know if we cut these mistakes out we are good enough to win National Championships. I am proud of the players who all pulled for each other and showed a real commitment to want to win, they will grow in stature following this performance.
