Karl McCormack wins Irish Faldo series

Karl McCormack from the Darren Clarke Golf School wins the U18 Faldo Series Ireland Championship.

The Faldo Series is one of the most popular and recognised junior golf events throughout the whole of Europe, attracting hundreds of the best and most promising young players.

This week the series was played in Ireland at the fantastic Lough Erne Resort where the Darren Clarke Golf School, Co Antrim, had a fantastic 17 players that made the ballot and were playing in the tournament.

In tough conditions DCGS first year student Karl McCormack, from Co Laois, kept his composure during a very testing first round to shoot a +1 73 which included an eagle on the 16th, this saw him enter the 2nd round tied for the lead.

DCGS Coach Jack Murgatroyd commented that ‘he (Karl) seemed very relaxed, he was having a laugh with some other students and not in any way overwhelmed that he was leading one of the biggest events in the Irish Golfing calendar’.

Karl, who is currently studying for a BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport (provided by NRC), started the 2nd round with the same confidence firing 2 birdies in the first 4 holes to finish the front 9 level par.  A double bogey on the 17th threatened to knock Karl’s composure but he finished well for a +4 76 which was good enough to tie for the lead and a 3 man playoff to decide the winner.

With large crowds of support, Karl took the playoff to 2 holes and to cheers of current and past DCGS students was crowned U18 Faldo Series Ireland Champion.

After the victory Karl spoke with DCGS Coach Jack Murgatroyd ‘all I was trying to do in that playoff was focus on my target and keep my ball in play and on that second extra hole I knew par would be good enough’. Karl thanked the support of all his fellow students and went on to say ‘the coaches at the school brought my game to this next level so thank you all, I owe this win to the coaches’

All of the DCGS staff are delighted with Karl progress DCGS coach Graham Mackay later said ‘Karls work ethic is fantastic and his attitude to the game is second to none, he deserves all the rewards’.  While the coaches are extremely proud of Karl’s achievement they want Karl to remain focused ‘this is a fantastic win for Karl, one that will spur on not just Karl but the rest of the team as well, if the team keeps working hard then they will continue to achieve great things’ DCGS Operations Manager Andy Peoples.

Congratulations to Karl and the rest of the students who represented the School fantastically throughout the week.

Karl and 5 other students from the Darren Clarke School travel to Princes next week to take part in the British Schools & Colleges National Finals.
