Rydal Penrhos opens new golf facility

Golfing superstar Amy Boulden praised a new facility at a Colwyn Bay school on a recent visit.

The 22 year-old Ladies European Tour player took time out of her busy schedule to officially open the Rydal Penrhos’ short game area, which is being used by its Golf Academy.

During the visit, which took place on Wednesday, November 18, Boulden was presented with a plaque to mark the opening before giving a short game master class with pupils and taking part in a question and answer session.

Boulden said: “It was a great day and I am very impressed with the facilities here at Rydal Penrhos.

“Learning and improving your short game is something that I feel is essential, as it is probably the hardest part of the game to master, and giving pupils the chance to practice it on a regular basis will be a huge benefit for them.

“It is fantastic that Rydal Penrhos is promoting young golfers and allowing them a platform to develop their game, and there aren’t many short game facilities at golf courses that are better than this.”

Boulden has been rising through the women’s’ ranks since she turned professional in September 2013, and produced a career best performance to finish in the top ten at the Ladies British Open this year.

Her first season on the LET proved to be extremely successful with three finishes in the top five which enabled Boulden to finish 18th in the Order Of Merit and take home the Rookie of the Year crown.

The Rydal Penrhos Golf Academy has gone from strength-to-strength in recent months, with a partnership launched with North Wales Golf Club that will encourage pupils to play and integrate fully as a junior member.

There has also been success on the course at the ISGA Scottish Open, with pupil Louisa Weber taking home both the individual and team nett title with partner Wilson Reyhan.

Ian Richardson, Golf Co-ordinator at Rydal Penrhos, said: “It was a fantastic day and one that staff and pupils enjoyed immensely.

“It has taken a lot of time and effort to get the Golf Academy up and running, and receiving praise from a player of Amy’s stature really makes all the hard work worthwhile.

“The players’ gained a lot from her insight and experience, something which I hope will stand them in good stead for the future.”
