The Stowe Putter

The 44th Stowe Putter Competition, 25 August 2011

In uncharacteristically clement if not balmy conditions, pupils from 24 IAPS schools challenged for the Stowe Putter and Junior Jigger (for Under 11 players). The Stowe Putter was first competed for in 1967 on the iconic Stowe Golf Course which is set in the landscaped gardens of Stowe. It was the brainchild of the then Stowe Headmaster, Bob Drayson together with two of Stowe’s legendary Walker Cup players, PB ‘Laddy’ Lucas and John Langley (John actually played in the Walker Cup whilst still at Stowe). It was Laddy Lucas who presented the Andrew Kirkaldy of St Andrews designed putter which players still compete for to this day.

We were delighted to welcome as our Guest of Honour, Eddie Bullock, currently Captain of the Professional Golfers’ Association (P.G.A.). Eddie is an old friend to Stowe, having started his golf teaching career here at the Stowe Golf Course with the legendary Alex Hay in the 1970’s.

In a very competitive final round, Joshua Taylor from Bedford Prep won the Stowe Putter with 54 Stableford points, just pipping Tom Robinson from Bromsgrove. The Junior Jigger was won by Xavier Schwartz (Hall Grove) on countback from Harry Baker (St Johns). The team trophy was won by Bedford Prep. They are pictured receiving their trophies from Eddie Bullock.

Next year’s Stowe Putter will be held on Thursday 23 August.   more pictures can be seen here
